Notepad Demo Application
This is a simple demonstration of KeymanWeb's Toolbar User Interface and On-Screen Keyboard combined with a text area, enabling users to experience typing in any language - or combination of languages - without additional downloads or installation.
Follow the steps below to try typing in your own or any other language:
What is a Keyboard?
KeymanWeb redefines which letter or character appears when a given key is pressed, and so removes the limitations of a physical keyboard arranged for typing in just one language. When using KeymanWeb, then, the term keyboard refers specifically to the way the keys are laid out for a particular language. For some languages, more than one keyboard layout is available: a typewriter-based layout and a phonetic layout, for example. For more information on keyboards, click here.
Selecting a Keyboard
To select a language in which to type, click on the Keyboards dropdown menu on the Toolbar. A world map, divided into regions, will be displayed, with a list of available languages below (right). Clicking on each region of the world will update the list to show which languages from that region can be used to type. Simply click on the name of the language you wish to use.
For languages which have only a single keyboard available, a label giving the name of the selected language will be added to the Toolbar, and you can click in a suitable text box or text area and begin typing with that keyboard.
For many of the languages included on this demonstration site, however, a variety of keyboard layouts is available. For these languages, a dropdown menu containing a list of keyboards will appear on the Toolbar (left). Click on the desired keyboard and then in the text box to begin typing using this keyboard.
Typing in Another Language
After selecting a language and keyboard as described above, click in a text box or text area which supports this language, and the On-Screen Keyboard will appear showing the keyboard layout. Anything you type will be displayed according to your selected keyboard and the font associated with that language.
On this demonstration application, an example of how to type in the language you have selected will be displayed below the Toolbar (right). Information on using the keyboard is available from the More help link beside the example.
However, when you click outside the text area, KeymanWeb will be automatically disabled, and any typing will be displayed in English or your default language. If you click back in the text area, KeymanWeb will become active again, with the last keyboard you selected enabled.
It is possible to type in more than one language inside a single text box by returning to the menus on the Toolbar and selecting a different language and/or keyboard. To disable KeymanWeb and return to typing in English or your default language, click on the 
icon near the centre of the Toolbar.
On-Screen Keyboard
The On-Screen Keyboard (left) is a dynamic display showing the layout of the keyboard you are using. Clicking on the On-Screen Keyboard icon 
on the right side of the Toolbar turns the On-Screen Keyboard on and off. When the On-Screen keyboard is activated, this icon will have a border around it, as shown. However, to avoid obscuring the display, the On-Screen Keyboard will not actually be displayed unless you have clicked in a text box which incorporates KeymanWeb, such as the Search field in this application.
